Caryx Fortuna

A fresh field of ripe caryx fortuna

Caryx fortuna, a species of plant known for its reputed magical and mind-altering effects, is commonly used by seers and other adherents and clandestine religious sects to ease their entrance into the 'river of time.' Future grass, as it is sometimes referred to grows in secluded forest glens, typically preferring a rather moist, shady habitat.

The Northern Bandits of the Dark Lands are especially fond of a variant of this plant that grows throughout the region. Gruit, as it is called there, is said to be an extremely pungent and potent subspecies of caryx fortuna, and is used often by their seers. Perhaps it is not coincidence that the Inalan seers are said to be the most accurate in their prophecies.

The drug can be consumed in any number of ways ranging from smoking the dried leaves, to brewing tea, to eating it raw, to even making it into a sort of paste that is spread over the body. Effects vary both in terms of the method of ingestion and the individual's peculiar traits. Those people with the gift of sight report that using caryx fortuna induces a trance like state wherein the often cryptic messages from the future become clearer, more distinct and easier to interpret. Others who are less disposed toward being able to see the future typically experience confusion, disorientation and even what some have described as waking nightmares.

Although the use of caryx fortuna is fairly widespread in many magickal communities and is generally considered acceptable behavior, it, as with all mind-altering substances, must be used within the bounds of what is considered reasonable: the abuse of caryx fortuna is by no means unheard of and, in some places including Elftown, it has become something of a nuisance.
